What the fuck is wrong with you??

Journal Entry: Wed Mar 27, 2013, 10:33 AM

:heart::iconsilverdeni::iconmushymutt::heart:

No call out journals, but I'd like to generalize this. Some of you are aware of what's going on. Some don't.

How can someone be so... shallow to have the nerve to commission various artists, art of a yoinked character design from someone, who paid for that character, AND send a reference image of the character drawn by that artist who originally owns it...

Why, people. Why.

This is the first time that happened to me, where someone commissions me to draw a stolen char...; Unfortunately I cannot do anything about it since the transaction is already done and my services have been offered, so the deal is closed, ended. Dude...  a while ago, I also had someone inquire a fursuit commission of my own fursona at some point which was... a bad idea. XD why people, why are you so... argh!

have you ever had that happen to you? You drew a commission of a stolen character or had your character stolen and drawn by others as a commission? Whether it's artwork or crafts (sculpts, fursuits etc etc)

I was doing free requests, and this person approaches me with this OC. Luckily I looked in their gallery and saw that they had no claim on the character. So the request was never finished.

I guess I am not popular enough to have stuff stolen from me XD
I only once had a commission with a character from somebody else than the commissioner, but it was a gift to the original owner :D

Oh my god I feel you!!

That is so frustrating...

While I've never actually had someone commission my own character, someone did steal it and try to make it their own.

I emphasize try, because it didn't work out so well on their part. ;)

I've had to much trouble with art theft it's made me insane. (No pun intended -Point to name-)

Anyway I wish you the best of luck with this and future art theft, because there probably will be some.

I have that problem personally with my own character (slightly irrelevant), but i've been inspired by certain artists' furries and their attributes and I want to emulate characteristics without being a charlatain about it. I actually been working on some new drawings of said character of mine and have great Ideas but I want it to be my own which seems impossible. Help?

I do not condone plagarism.

How was the character stolen? Was it being claimed by another artist as their creation? I'm just trying to understand what happened... ^^'

I'm a bit late posting this, but this has never happened to me.
However, I recall someone claiming that I gave them one of my characters, and then trying to sell that character off, when in fact I hadn't.

I recently found out about this, the worst thing is, the person who used my character, used her as a sex toy. He got a commission of his character banging my character and I never gave him permission to use her nor do I even know him! My character has never had an adult piece done of her and if she did it would of been with my mate of 5 years. The worst part is he made a story about it, claiming that he was the father having sexual relations with his daughter, he didnt even bother to change the characters name.

It's weird, even though she isn't REAL, shes still mine and a reflection of myself and it makes me feel >->..... Violated... LOL

The artist who did the piece felt really bad and took it down but he still hasn't

The closest incident I had was when a friend's character got stolen and sold by the friend's ex girlfriend. It was pretty blatant too as in the comments, the friend's screen name was mentioned and linked saying how the friend lost the rights to the character and therefore, no longer belongs to him. Messy...Messy

Its odd how seemingly popular artists tend to be the target of what you brought up in the Journal. Its kind of redundant that someone would try and use someone else's character as their own to get art work of it for their own purposes. I've heard of someone else's character trying to be used for a Fursuit. :icontanidareal: was a prime example, but luckily, the person being commissioned for a Suit of her character Tani knew of :icontanidareal: 's work and contacted her and the Fursuit transaction never went through. Its sad when someone tries to ride on the coat tails of popular artists.

I haven't been on either end of a commission, but I have heard of someone who did something like this on FurAffinity. The person who commissioned art of the stolen character then posted a rage quit journal over it, only drawing more attention to what he did.

I do commissions and it has never happened to me, but hey - don't get angry over it. It's the internet. What we share here, we share with half the world. Personally I don't think it's bad that someone wants commissions of someone else's characters - isn't that what fanart is about? Your character is liked enough to have fans! It's a whole nother story if someone says THEY created it, but I don't think wanting fan art of it is a bad thing.

I was once commissioned by someone who had an OC that they ripped off from someone else. they re-drew the OC in different clothes and a couple of facial piercings, but it was obviously the same OC I had seen someone else on deviantart create years ago. I am currently dealing with this. The person who was ripped off is someone I am "watch"ing and I love her work, so I take this kinda personally. I'm just gonna send her a note and let her decide if she wants to do anything. Since the ripoff was posted offsite, I dont think she can do anything. In this case, the ripoff artist really IS claiming that it's their OC.

sadly, I really dont think anyone can do anything. It's nice to hear an artist honest enough to post about this :D

I know how you feel to be honest, I had a person on FurAffinity commission me two characters and about a month later these two people contacted me asking me to the picture down because the male character in it was Stolen. They even provided me a reference for the original character and whom it belonged to.

All I basically did was remove the picture.

I don't really understand it either other than a liking in the same colors/markings, sometimes I feel it's a lack of creativity to the person who stole the character in the first place.
I hope everything is resolved by now.

Yeah I saw all the comments and stuff on FA. I was a little confused myself... why would someone waste their money to commission artists of a character that's stolen when they could use that money to commission the same artists of a character that's actually theirs? I just don't know uuu

I've never had this happen though I must say that if you steal someone's character and commission someone for it, I don't know, it feels like it wouldn't feel like you would be as happy if you saw it because the characters aren't yours...... and the fact you just spent money on characters that aren't yours....

Only way I'll ever use a reference picture is to convey the style, genre, theme, etc, that I want used for whatever it is that I'm doing. Pictures give me ideas for things, so it's not uncommon for me to come up with a roleplaying character idea based on a picture I saw. But that's no excuse to directly rip off another person's characters.

With that said, most (if not all) pictures are a representation of an original character that was dreamed up by that artist. You can have a character concept without an image to go with it, but I don't think it goes the other way around. I call it the Square/Rectangle Effect. I draw inspiration from good art. I look at the image and think: "Who is this person? What might they be like?" The end result is a completely original concept that began with a picture, but is nothing like the character depicted.

These people aren't trying to get ideas, or inspiration, or anything of the kind. They've seen something they like and they've taken it. The worst part is that they're totally comfortable with it.

What if I decided to randomly claim ownership of Lola Bunny (Space Jam)? Warner Brothers (or whomever owns them by now) would rise as one coalescence of rage and righteous fury and bury me so deep in legal documents I'd never see the light of day again. Why is this practice considered to be so acceptable in the artists' community?

For those who believe it is ok, just consider the fact that all artwork is intellectual property. It's recognized by law as being the property of its creator(s). The very fact that eBay changed its sales policy of video game items to reflect that fact is proof enough. It's the same for all intellectual property: If you use it without permission, then you have committed a crime. Period. There is no ethical double-talk, no mental gymnastics, no psychological trickery that can get you around that fact. Call it whatever you want, but that won't change what it is.

I won't say I've never picked up a picture or two from Google, just to show what a roleplaying character of mine might look like, but I have always prominently displayed the artists' names (when I can find them), or a notification that the art is not mine, and that the character I describe is not the artist's original character. Any picture I have ever used has been as a way to say: "He/she looks like this". I have CERTAINLY never used them for profit, or tried to wrangle a carbon-copy commission from another artist. That's just...dirty.

If you like the art that much, try showing the artist a little courtesy. Commissions are the highest praise. It sure beats having to see their hard work claimed by someone else.

I had this happen two times before in the past... but I found out quickly enough that the characters/designs were stolen that I didn't actually draw them or get paid.
It's just plain sad how many people actually do this expecting not to get caught =/ dA may be a big place but it's more closely knit among friends and fans than people think. Some people watch thousands of people but the human mind can remember a shocking array of things and despite seeing the same colours over and over again you can still recognize designs and such.

Sorry it's happened to you =/ That's just ridiculous and I hope the people that do these things finally realize the error of their ways. Though I fear they won't which is just sad :I
